The Punjab government has officially approved the launch of a Lahore tram service in Lahore, marking a significant step toward enhancing the city’s transportation infrastructure. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her recent visit to the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) headquarters.

The new tram project aims to provide efficient and modern public transport to Lahore’s residents and visitors. The LDA has begun work on this ambitious project, which will cover an 11-kilometer route featuring 10 strategically placed stops. These stops will be approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers apart, ensuring accessibility and convenience for commuters.

Drawing inspiration from successful tram models in Finland and China, the Lahore tram project is designed to incorporate advanced technology and sustainable practices. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs27 billion, reflecting the government’s commitment to investing in high-quality urban transport solutions.

The proposed tram route will pass through some of Lahore’s most prominent localities, including Main Boulevard from Kalma Chowk, Liberty Market, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road. This route is strategically chosen to connect key commercial and residential areas, facilitating easy travel across the city.

An important aspect of the project is the conversion of MM Alam Road into a one-way street to accommodate the tram line. This change is part of a broader remodeling and beautification effort, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic and functional appeal of the area.

One of the highlights of the tram service will be a dedicated stop within Gaddafi Stadium, offering a convenient transport option for sports enthusiasts and event-goers. This feature is expected to boost attendance at sporting events and concerts, as well as reduce traffic congestion during major events.

While the exact ticket prices for the tram service will be announced closer to the launch date, the service promises to offer an affordable and efficient travel option for all. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to modernizing Lahore’s transportation network and improving the quality of urban life.
